Goodbye Paolo Cioffi | poster

Comrade Paolo Cioffi, founder and honorary president of our association, we left a few hours ago. It is a great pain for all of us at Future Humanity, as well as for all those who have been able to meet and learn about his sharp wit, fierce and tireless political passion, toughness, and irony over the years.

Paolo Cioffi devoted his entire life as a communist fighter and leader to the political and cultural commitment to a different world, to that new socialism that was at the center of his thinking, within the best traditions of Italian communism.

From a communist family, Paolo was born in Rome on November 18, 1935. He started his political struggle as a student, then PCI sent him to study at Moscow University. There he learned the Russian language and came into contact with the world of international communism. In 1957 he had worked as a translator during the World Congress of Communist Parties.

Back in Italy, he became a “revolutionary by profession”, a cadre of party members. In 1966, the day after the Eleventh Congress of the Communist Party of China, Enrico Berlinguer, the new regional secretary of Lazio, proposed him as secretary of the Latina Regional Federation. There, Paolo “collected his experience” as a political leader, continuing, among other things, to fight for the abolition of wage “cages”.

In 1969 Ciofi joined the Central Committee. The following year, he took over from Berlinguer as party secretary in Lazio, and at the same time was elected to the regional council. In 1975 he became deputy chairman of the regional council. Two years later, the secretary of the Romanian Confederation Party. In 1983 he was elected a member of the House of Representatives, and in the same years he was also a coordinator of the Economic Department of the Communist Party of China.

In 1989, facing the turning point in Bologna announced by Okito, Sioufi sided with No Front, and later joined the Association for the Renewal of the Left led by Aldo Tortorella.

Since the 1990s Paolo has devoted himself to extensive journalistic and research activity, and has published important books, from Il lavoro senza rappresentanza. privatization policy (Manuals, 2004) a Capital bankruptcy and the new company (Reunity University editor, 2012), from Constitution and revolution (Editori Riuniti, 2017) e The revolution of our time. Manifesto for a New Socialism (Runited Publishing House, 2018).

A staunch advocate of PCI’s great ideal legacy, his idea was to create a “the future of humanity. Association for PCI History and Memoryand, in the years of our Society’s life, we have all had the opportunity to learn much from it—content, methods, and mode of work—and also to know and appreciate its human aspects, its liveliness, and its paradoxes.

We will always remember him with great affection and gratitude, for what his life was, for his tireless commitment, and for what he gave us all. From today we feel more committed to moving forward with his ideals and teachings.

To Cicci Salinari, life partner of Paolo and militancy, and their children our heartfelt condolences and big hugs from all of us.
