From organic waste from slaughterhouses renewable energy such as bio-methane, bio-carbon and hydrogen. The initiative starts from the University of Perugia where an all-female team developed the project called Biotherep. An initiative aimed at creating a project for a pilot plant that can be replicated and which has also won European funding: the activity is carried out by a working group that has been dealing with the circular economy and sustainable development for several years. The project has two goals: on the one hand, there is the reduction of waste treatment to be disposed of, on the other hand, the production of energy as part of a fully circular process.

The research team in Perugia consists of Assunta Marrocchi (Department of Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology), Ombretta Marconi (Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences) and Raffaella Branciari (Department of Veterinary Medicine): “Biotherep aims to hybridize the biochemistry and thermochemistry of organic waste from slaughterhouses to produce Renewable energy is one of the goals2030 Agenda for sustainable development adopted by the United Nations. With climate change becoming more important, sustainable and clean energy sources are needed today more than ever.”

The project, which was awarded a European grant, was among the 10 projects funded under the LEA-PRE program published by the long-term EU-Africa Partnership Program for Research and Innovation in Renewable Energy.

Even private partners

“At the end of the process – confirms Assunta Marrocchi – we plan to produce bio-methane, bio-carbon and hydrogen”.

The project, stresses the university, “specifically sees partners from the academic sector (universities and research centers) and partners from the private sector as participants.”
