FS, Bologna Prato will become a corridor for freight trains

The growth of rail freight transport is through the construction of new infrastructures, but also through the development of existing ones. For this reason, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the parent company of the infrastructure pole of the FS Group, is involved in the technological and infrastructure modernization of the traditional line (historic line) Bologna-Prato, to adapt the network to European standards as scheduled for the movement of goods, after the completion of the first phase of Works already in 2021, centered in the Vernio-Prato department. The total investment amounts to more than 530 million euros, of which about 93 million is intended for the interventions scheduled between Pianoro and San Benedetto Val di Sambro, where construction sites have begun in recent months. To minimize the impact on the movement of trains along the Bologna Prato line, three phases of intervention were envisaged, all lasting 12 months and taking place in alternating years. The Vernio-Prato section has already been completed; Now it is the turn of the line between Pianoro and San Benedetto Val di Sambro; Finally, between December 2024 and December 2025, RFI construction sites will be moved between San Benedetto Val di Sambro and Vernio.

The traditional, business-influenced network runs parallel to the high-speed network and represents the heart of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean railway corridor, an important hub for the European economy and trade, given its goal of promoting freight transport between Norway and Sweden, the heart of Central Europe and Italy, even the far south, which also strengthens our country as a platform Great logistics in the Mediterranean. In this context, the interventions, once completed, will immediately ensure a more efficient connection between the Tuscan ports and the Emilia-Romagna port and logistics system with Central and Northern Europe. The aim is therefore to offer a business capable of facilitating the task set by the FS Group in its ten-year industrial plan by the end of 2025: to double the share of freight transported by rail. A goal that must also be achieved by promoting multimedia and thus linking the railways with the main ports of the country. Not just the merchandise, though. In general, all railway traffic will benefit from the planned works in terms of line regularity and punctuality.

In detail, the planned interventions concern tunnels, tracks, power lines and technological systems for the movement of trains, to allow the passage of cargo convoys used to transport semi-trailers and high-cube containers (rolling highway). The most complex activity will be the widening of more than 40 kilometers of tunnels for a total of 17 tunnels, which will require milling of basements, lowering surface iron and retrofitting electric power supply lines to trains. The largest of the seventeen tunnels is more than seven kilometers long. On the one hand, improving traffic management systems will increase the efficiency and reliability of all railway traffic, not only freight, but also regional, medium and long-haul transportation.

Rfi explains: «The business has been planned to contain the impact on commuter travel, with the summer closure of schools and the closure of some business activities, albeit for a shorter period. However, exchange services are provided by buses approved by Rfi, Trenitalia and Trenitalia Tper with the Emilia-Romagna region, the Tuscany region, local institutions and passenger commissions. From Sunday 11 June until 11 August 2023, rail traffic between Pianoro and Fernio will be suspended; from 12 August to 3 September between Pianoro and Prato; From September 11 to November 12, 2023 between Bologna and San Benedetto Val di Sambro. There are no changes to the service on the Bologna-Florence high-speed line.
