Venice, in San Marco works for 3.3 million

The Venetian company will work on restoring the Basilica San Marco in the next few days. 27 companies were invited to tender: seven were selected and the winner (in a temporary group of companies with mosaic-restoration specialist Carla Tomassi) – for a total amount of €3.3 million – was RTI Lares Lavori di Restauro di Venezia which ensured the entire execution of the works over two years and four months. This is a historic institution in the field of restoration in Venice, which has followed in the past other construction sites in the city.

On June 20, the presentation of the Basilica restoration work was held in the Sant’Apolonia congress hall, which will start in the coming days thanks to a generous loan of 3.3 million euros obtained from the Ministry of Culture as part of the 2021 – 2023 Strategic Plan “Large Cultural Heritage Projects” set Then to the Superintendence of Sabab in Venice, which for the first time considered the Vicariate of San Marco a contractual station.

The meeting was attended by the first Prosecutor of San Marco Carlo Alberto Tesserien, who gave his regards during the flow, giving the floor to the agent of San Marco Bruno Baril, the director of Sababe in Venice Fabrizio Magani, and the hero Mario Piana. He gave an account of the types of recovery interventions.

Attorney General Burrell noted the operational process that led to the award of the bid, and specifically thanked all parties involved for the speed of the contract. Procuratoria di San Marco has accepted the challenge of being the contracting station for a large amount of work. Also present in the room was the director of the Lares company – Mario Sherrido, who signed the report on the commissioning of the work. Superintendent Magani, during his speech, emphasized how, with this restoration, we would be intervening in the history of the restoration of Venice thanks to the historical documents found in the archives of the basilica.

Safe from water

The square area is already the subject of other interventions, for example to repair the monument from rising water. Proto Mario Piana presented on schedule the restoration interventions that will mainly affect the stone cladding of the north wing of the portico – the atrium of the chapel – and the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. The walls of the portico were badly damaged by the crystallization of salt water due to frequent floods: now this area is safe thanks to the temporary glass partition that surrounds the church and defends it from the flooding of the square even with less than 110 cm of water, measured in which the Mose will begin.
