In memory of Paolo Cioffi

We join dear Cicci Salinari and the whole family, in mourning the passing of Paolo Cioffi. We want to fondly remember an ardent and stern political leader, throughout the history of Italian communism as a hero from a young age.

Fgci and PCI campaigner since the early 1950s, with many leadership responsibilities in the party (from the Latina Federation to the Roma Federation and at the national level), in the Municipality of Rome, in the Lazio region in which he was. Vice-President in the Seventies, and Parliamentary expert on economic issues: thus his very rich biography. He studied economics at Moscow University, where he lived for years, developed a great knowledge of Russian culture and entered into close relations with the world of international communism, always defending the idealistic and political specificity of the Italian Communists, at that time the secretariat of Enrico Berlinguer.

Having actively participated in the region’s initiative opposing the transformation of PCI, he subsequently remained a convinced adherent of the left, participating in the birth of our association, of which he was also vice-president. He founded Futura Umanita, dedicated to maintaining the connection between the history of the left and the emergencies of current events. Writer, essayist, and polemicist against the decadence of bad politics, Ciofi leaves us a legacy of a crucial point in his research and work: the tireless defense of a constitution born of resistance. “The values written in the Charter – he stressed – are the main point, the essential element of any renewal of the Left.” With “Futura Umanita” we will remember the work and struggles of Paolo Sioufi: an example for all of us.
