Patrick Zaki was sentenced to three years in prison. This was announced by one of the activists’ lawyers at the conclusion of today’s session in Mansoura, Egypt. ANSA reported that Zaki was taken from the courtroom through the corridor into the cage of the defendants, amid the cries of his mother and girlfriend, who were waiting outside.

Lawyer Hazem Salah explained that when calculating the period of pretrial detention that has already been deducted, he will have to spend another 14 months in prison in addition to the 22 months he has already served until December 2021.

The comment by Riccardo Nuri, a spokesperson for Italian Amnesty, who described the three-year prison sentence on Twitter as “the worst possible scenario”.

Patrick Zaki’s main lawyer announced his appeal: “We will ask the military governor to cancel the sentence or retrial,” Hoda Nasrallah said in an interview with ANSA in front of the Justice Building.
