After the pandemic, there is a clear recovery in mobility and, accordingly, in road accidents. The bulletin compiled by the Aci-Istat report for 2022 is dire: 3,159 dead (+9.9% compared to 2021), 223,475 injured (+9.2%), in 165,889 road accidents (+9.2%). All values ​​increased compared to the previous year, although they continued to decrease, compared to 2019 for accidents and injuries (respectively -3.7%, -7.4%) and almost stable for victims (-0.4%).

On average 454 accidents per day resulting in 8.7 deaths

On average, 454 accidents occurred each day (18.9 every hour) with 8.7 fatalities (1 every 3 hours) and 612 injuries (25.5 every hour).

Eighteen billion social cost of claims

The social cost of road accidents in 2022 is approximately €18 billion (0.9% of national GDP): +9.8% compared to €16.4 billion in 2021.

The fatality rate is 5.4, but 14 regions above average

In 2022, the death rate — the number of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants — will be higher than the national average (5.4) in 14 regions. Basilicata (8.5), Valle d’Aosta (8.1), Emilia-Romagna (7.0), and Umbria and Piedmont stand out, both at 5.7. In 7 regions, death rates were lower than the national average: Liguria (3.8), Lombardy, Calabria (both 4.0), Campania (4.1), Abruzzo (4.6), Sicily (4.7) and Molise (4.8).

More people die on roads outside the cities

The death rate is increasing everywhere. It remains higher on roads outside cities (4.3 deaths per 100 accidents), and decreases to 3.5 on highways and 1.1 on urban roads (4.1, 3.2 and 1.1, respectively, in 2021). The national average, which has been virtually unchanged since 2010, is 1.9. Casualties rise among car passengers (1,375; +15.4%), motorcyclists (781, +12.4%), motorcyclists (70, +4.5%) and pedestrians (485, +3.2%). On the other hand, there was a decrease among cyclists (205, were 220 in 2022: -6.8%) and truck occupants (166 deceased: -1.8%).
